The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Augustine Perez (ASN: 38456829), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 20 February, 1945. Private Perez moved to the leading position when his platoon attacked a strongly defended building in Manila. Although drawing the first enemy fire from positions 20 to 30 yards away, he continued to advance in the forefront of the assault, eagerly seeking out the enemy. He was the first to enter the building and the first to dash through its chambers. As he advanced he killed two Japanese and routed four others until the structure was completely cleared of hostile forces. Private Perez’s outstanding zeal and gallantry stimulated his entire platoon to a quickened pace, and inspired his fellow soldiers to the quick achievement of decisive victory. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
