The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Harold L. Peppler (ASN: 35560250), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 20 February 1945, during an attack on strong enemy positions, a member of the assault squad was seriously wounded and fell helpless in the street, exposed to enemy rifle and machine gun fire. Private Peppler left his covered position to go to the rescue of the wounded soldier, and as he dashed through the hail of enemy fire he was himself, wounded. Continuing on his way, he reached the injured man, and dragged him to safety. Just as he reached cover Private Peppler was fatally wounded by enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
