The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lewis N. Parkhurst (ASN: 36509979), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. As Private Parkhurst’s squad advanced in an attack against Mount Pacawagan on 21 April 1945 a sudden burst of enemy machine gun fire wounded three men in his unit, including himself. He immediately noticed that the second in command of his squad was seriously injured and lay in an exposed position to his front. Disregarding his own painful wound, Private Parkhurst rose and dashed to the aid of the casualty. He then administered first aid in this extremely hazardous and dangerously exposed position. Later, even though his right hand had been rendered useless by bullet wounds, Private Parkhurst half dragged arid half carried his wounded comrade to safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
