The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Anthony Papp (ASN: 35008201), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 February, 1945. During an attack against a strong enemy-held building in Manila, a soldier was seriously wounded by hostile machine gun fire and lay completely exposed to enemy observation in a corridor of the structure. Sergeant Papp immediately grasped the situation and started voluntarily to the rescue. With the aid of another man he crawled into the unobstructed hall, under Japanese fire from positions only 75 yards away, and removed the injured man to safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
