The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Robert W. Haubrich (ASN: 0-5517460), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 28 September 1967. Captain Haubrich distinguished himself by gallant action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company H, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. Captain Haubrich was leading his tank company on a search and destroy mission when word was received that a well-camouflaged enemy force was moving away from the sweep. He quickly maneuvered his tanks in pursuit of the enemy. When the lead elements approached the hostile force the enemy turned and engaged them. Despite heavy anti-tank and automatic weapons fire, Captain Haubrich led his forces through the enemy positions and personally killed many North Vietnamese soldiers. When the enemy survivors attempted to flee into a bunker complex, Captain Haubrich and his company maintained constant pressure on them, engaging and destroying the complex despite heavy and accurate enemy fire. The three hour battle resulted in 23 enemy dead and the capture of several enemy individual and crew served weapons. Captain Haubrich’s personal courage, leadership and devotion to duty in the face of hostile fire are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
