The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George F. Oldenborg (ASN: 0-1318215), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 2 March 1945. During the initial assaults on an important enemy-held building in Manila, Lieutenant Oldenborg sent one squad across the street to gain entrance into the structure. They had just entered when the enemy displayed a white flag from the roof. Lieutenant Oldenborg ordered his men to cease firing to accept the surrender of two of the enemy. In the process of searching the prisoners, the remaining Japanese forces within the building opened fire on the street, killing one of the surrendering pair and forcing Lieutenant Oldenborg and the other to take cover. It was then decided to withdraw the forward squad and place more intense artillery fire on the new enemy strongpoints. However, two of the squad members did not hear the withdrawal order and failed to come out. Lieutenant Oldenborg immediately crossed the street under heavy fire, killed an enemy in the corridor of the building and led the remaining men of the squad under a prearranged smoke screen to the safety of a building occupied by our troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
