The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Albert W. Nowjack (ASN: 35006058), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 1 February 1945. During the advance of an infantry company against an enemy-held town, a hostile machine gun opened fire on the troops and seriously wounded one man. Sergeant Nowjack, an aid man attached to the company, immediately started to his aid, crawling fifty yards through mud and water despite the advice of his comrades, that he should wait until the firing subsided a bit. He reached the side of the wounded man and gave him aid while still under the heavy fire of the enemy guns, and remained with the casualty until he could be evacuated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
