Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 116 (May 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles J. Nichter (ASN: 38588777), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 4 February, 1945. When slight movement was detected in a thicket twenty-five yards to his platoon’s right flank, Private Nichter volunteered to reconnoiter the area. Accompanied by one other man, he moved boldly to the edge of the thicket and observed twelve enemy soldiers only ten yards away. Firing initially from the hip, he killed five Japanese, and so disorganized the hostile force, that his companion was able to bring up reinforcements, who aided in completely crushing the enemy group. Private Nichter’s brave action prevented an enemy flank attack on his platoon, and enabled his company to successfully continue its assigned mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
