The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Rex E. Nelson (ASN: 37664421), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. Private Nelson was with the leading elements of his assault platoon near Calot on 14 April 1945 and was guiding a medium tank when he observed an enemy machine gun position. He directed the cannoneer’s fire and the position was destroyed. The tank was then forced to withdraw because of mechanical difficulties, leaving Private Nelson out in front alone. His Platoon Commander came forward to cover Private Nelson’s withdrawal, but in so doing he was seriously wounded by an enemy rifleman and lay exposed in the road. Private Nelson immediately ran to his leader’s side and dragged him to the safety of a cave, where he applied first aid. However, the Platoon Commander failed to respond to the treatment and died soon afterwards. As he started to return to his unit, Private Nelson saw six enemy riflemen emerging from a cave 50 yards up the road. He opened fire, and with four rounds from his rifle killed two of the enemy and scattered the remainder. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
