Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 205 (July 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class David H. Neighbors (ASN: 35727791), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 May 1945. During the battle for Baguio, a Browning Automatic Rifleman was wounded and forced to drop his weapon. Private Neighbors immediately picked up the rifle and started to advance despite enemy grenades which exploded all around him. His spirited assault in full view of the enemy, under intense machine gun, rifle, and grenade fire, inspired his comrades to press the attack with renewed fury. As a direct result of Private Neighbors’ aggressive and effective fire the Japanese were driven from their positions and his company’s objective was secured. He was subsequently killed in action against the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
