The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Raymond Nastally (ASN: 36415521), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 2 February, 1945. Private Nastally, a company aid man, voluntarily crawled under enemy fire to give first aid and rescue American casualties who were lying within 30 yards of a Japanese emplacement. One of the wounded men had previously been hit attempting this same mission. Arriving at the hazardous spot, Private Nastally discovered that only one of the men was alive, and, after giving first aid, he assisted him to the rear. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
