The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John L. Murphy (ASN: 42021173), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 28 January, 1945. Private Murphy, a medical aid man attached to an infantry unit, courageously exposed himself to intense close-range enemy rifle fire in order to quickly give first aid to two seriously wounded comrades. The enemy fire was so heavy and accurate that Private Murphy had to treat the wounds from a prone position. His prompt and skillful treatment saved the lives of the wounded men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army. HOME ADDRESS: Corning, New York.
