Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 162 (June 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edsel R. Mullins (ASN: 38503074), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 February 1945. When wounded members of a rifle company were trapped by the raging fire in Manila, Private Mullins volunteered to help rescue the casualties. Braving intense hostile fire and the constant explosions of enemy demolitions, he made two trips down a fire enveloped street to single-handedly carry two men 100 yards to a position of safety. Private Mullins’ courageous action saved the lives of two American soldiers. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
