Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 124 (May 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Leo Mulcahy (ASN: 20504567), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 27 January 1945. During an advance by his platoon, Sergeant Mulcahy and his squad encountered well constructed, camouflaged enemy pillboxes. While attempting to locate the targets, Sergeant Mulcahy observed an enemy soldier throwing a hand grenade at one of his men. He warned his men to get down and then killed the Japanese with one shot. The enemy then started throwing many hand grenades, wounding some of the men and forcing them all to lie flat. In spite of this fire, Sergeant Mulcahy stood up, rallied his troops, and urged them forward. While thus exposed to the enemy, he was wounded in the head. Despite his great pain, Sergeant Mulcahy led a charge against the enemy fortification which resulted in 15 enemy dead and a complete rout of the remaining enemy force. His fearless leadership, courage and aggressiveness so inspired his men that they willingly followed him, stormed the enemy positions and successfully completed their mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
