The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Willie E. Moring (ASN: 38357854), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 14 February 1945. When his company received intense hostile fire while attacking the Manila Club Building, Staff Sergeant Morning volunteered to take the place of the assistant gunner in an American tank, and point out hostile targets to the crew. The tank succeeded in knocking out two enemy pillboxes, but as the advanced continued it struck a land mine and burst into flames. After leaping from the armored vehicle, Staff Sergeant Morning noticed that the tank driver was unable to lift the hatch because of severe burns. Staff Sergeant Moring reentered the tank, and put out the flames which were engulfing his companions clothes, He then carried the injured man to a position of safety and supervised medical treatment. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Moring, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
