Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 190 (July 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William S. Moores (ASN: 38475722), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During the attack against Mount Pacawagan on 7 May 1945, Private Moores’ platoon was halted by surprise enemy cross fire. Private Moores immediately crawled forward in order to locate the hostile machine guns. Although forced to occupy an exposed position, and wounded in the arm by Japanese mortar fire, he maintained observation of the enemy movements and succeeded in killing three hostile machine gunners. Although his arm bled badly, he refused to leave his advantageous position until additional riflemen were moved forward to replace him. Private Moores’ devotion to duty and extreme aggressiveness aided immeasurably in the final accomplishment of his unit’s mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
