Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 165 (June 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Albert Millheim (ASN: 33078335), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 February 1945. When a large group of enemy penetrated his organization’s perimeter at night, Corporal Millheim observed approximately a dozen Japanese moving across a field toward his position. He immediately opened fire with his sub-machine gun, causing the enemy to take cover behind a thick growth of bush across the road from him. Corporal Millheim then left his place of safety, made a bold dash to the middle of the road where he could see the hostile troops behind the bush, and tossed a hand grenade at them. He then ran back to his original position, fired his weapon, pulled the pin of another grenade and again ran to the middle of the road to throw it. Corporal Millheim repeated this courageous act fourteen times, on each occasion being subjected to hostile fire, and the next morning a total of nine enemy dead were found behind the bush. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
