The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Henry Messino (ASN: 33066952), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 29 January 1945. During the attack across Clark Field, Private First Class Henry Messino and Private First Class Jerry A Palumbo were taking cover from enemy fire in a revetment when they saw a comrade fall seriously wounded in a position exposed to enemy fire. Picking up a litter, they immediately started to the rescue. The moment they left their position they were met by heavy hostile machine gun fire and were forced to withdraw to safety. They then went to the other side of the revetment and used a different route. For 100 yards they worked their way over open exposed terrain and succeeded in reaching the casualty. Placing him on the litter they started to the aid station. On the return trip the area was subjected to an intense enemy mortar barrage and they were forced to hit the ground numerous times to avoid being wounded. Through their courage and determination they successfully reached the aid station, and were instrumental in saving their comrade’s life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Messino, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
