The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Fred H. Meier (ASN: 36310446), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. When the advance of his company was halted by enemy positions in a cave during the attack against Mount Pacawagan on 21 April 1945, Corporal Meier, a flame thrower operator, crawled forward to within 15 yards of the hostile position. Then he rose and fired a devastating burst of flame which successfully neutralized the position. Later investigation revealed the charred remains of 32 Japanese soldiers in the cave. Corporal Meier’s heroic action enabled his unit to successfully accomplish its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
