The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edward G. Means (ASN: 35784982), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During a bitter fire-fight which ensued when an American motorized reconnaissance patrol clashed with the enemy at a Japanese-held roadblock near San Antonio on 19 June 1945, an American soldier was seriously wounded while attempting to remove a machine gun from a truck. Private Mans voluntarily dashed to his rescue, but as he started to carry the casualty to safety, he was mortally wounded. Private Means valiantly sacrificed his life in a courageous attempt to save a comrade. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
