Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 544 (December 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain (Infantry) Vernon B. McMillen, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 10 July 1943. Captain McMillen led the counterattack on 10 and 20 July 1943, which drove off enemy troops who threatened a vital road block at a junction of three important trails. The courage he displayed in the execution of the counter assault was so conspicuous as to inspire his men and quickly instill in them the confidence with which they stemmed this infiltration. He personally accounted for many of the enemy dead and wounded. On 20 July, he determined the location of the enemy’s rear installations at Bairoko Harbor by personal reconnaissance and then led a successful flank attack. Captain McMillen’s courage and leadership won him the deep respect of the troops and were of material aid in the success of his battalion. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Captain McMillen and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
