Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 148 (June 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Joseph E. McFadden (ASN: 33783215), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 20 April 1945. When two Filipinos in a party of civilians carrying ammunition and water to our forces during an attack, were struck by fire from a hidden enemy rifleman, Corporal McFadden, a company aid man, rushed to their help, knowing that the casualties lay in full view of the hidden rifleman. He treated one, and while administering first aid to the second, was fatally wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
