Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 68 (March 30, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) John G. McCurdy (ASN: 0-328047), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, from 9 January 1945 to 5 February 1945. Captain McCurdy’s motorized patrols operating far in advance of our lines, often times against concentrated Japanese forces, continually seized and secured strategic cities, road junctions and bridges, and held them until reinforcing infantry arrived. At Camilling on 15 January, at Culayo on 24 January, and near Calumpit on 29 January, Captain McCurdy led members of his Reconnaissance Troop in close-in attacks on hostile troops who threatened to delay the American advances. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain McCurdy, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
