The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Henry C. McCormick (ASN: 37372437), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 17 April 1945. During an intense enemy mortar and artillery barrage, Corporal McCormick voluntarily left his sheltered position to help evacuate the wounded from the danger area. While lifting a seriously wounded soldier on to a litter, he was struck in the back and abdomen by shell fragments. Although painfully wounded, he refused to stop and helped carry the litter-patient to the aid station, where he collapsed from loss of blood. His gallantry saved the life of his wounded comrade. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
