The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bruce E. McCary (ASN: 34611053), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. Private McCary, an automatic rifleman, was manning his unit’s perimeter in Baguio on the night of 30 April 1945 when the Japanese made a frontal assault against his position. Two rifleman, occupying adjoining positions, were fatally wounded, and Private McCary courageously covered the entire front with a heavy volume of fire. During one brief lull in the fight, he heard a moan from the hole of one of the wounded men, and immediately exposed himself in order to crawl to the aid of the casualty. Private McCary remained above ground, while treating the casualty in a small foxhole and he was periodically forced to suspend his first aid treatment in order to fire at the hostile forces. He remained in his precarious position although wounded in the shoulder until all of his ammunition and grenades had been expended, and the injured man had expired. Private McCary then crawled to his company command post and asked for ammunition and reinforcements to take back to his position. However, the enemy attack had subsided and he was ordered to remain at the command post for medical treatment. The following morning five hostile dead and a heavy machine gun disabled by hand grenades were found approximately 10 yards from Private McCary’s position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
