Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 321 (October 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Stanley H. Mayhall (ASN: 0-1329261), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 3 August 1945. Second Lieutenant Mayhall was leading a reconnaissance patrol near Lagum when the lead scout was wounded by enemy machine gun fire and lay in a clearing completely exposed to hostile fire. Organizing two automatic riflemen to give covering fire, Second Lieutenant Mayhall crawled forward to the injured men. Working under constant observation and fire of the enemy machine gun, he administered first aid and then dragged the casualty to a position of safety. Second Lieutenant May hall’s heroic action saved the life of his fellow soldier. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Mayhall, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
