The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jesse H. Martin (ASN: 39412202), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 8 July 1945. When his squad was brought under intense hostile fire near Baguio, Sergeant Martin raced forward in the face of the enemy fire, and half-dragged and half-carried a seriously wounded comrade fifty yards to safety. He then returned over the same hazardous route and attempted to drag another man to safety. Sergeant Martin had almost reached cover with the casualty when he was painfully wounded in the leg and was forced to retire. Sergeant Martin’s courage under Japanese fire and unselfish devotion to his comrades exemplified the finest traditions of the Armed Forces. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Martin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
