Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (February 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Joe B. White (ASN: 6923062), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. When it became necessary for his company to withdraw from an encircled position, First Sergeant White fearlessly exposed himself to heavy machine gun and mortar fire and skillfully coordinated the movement of his men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
