The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John J. Malewski (ASN: 0-1303603), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Manila, Philippine Islands, during World War II. While leading his platoon in an attack against a group of enemy soldiers near Camaling on 15 January 1945, Lieutenant Malewski displayed outstanding courage and combat efficiency. The assault troops were forced to cross a rice field and were completely exposed to hostile fire, but Lieutenant Malewski was always with the most advanced elements, pointing out targets to his men and directing their fire. The attack resulted in a complete rout of the enemy, with 39 Japanese soldiers being killed. Lieutenant Malewski’s fearless leadership and tactical proficiency was the main factor in the brilliant success attained by his platoon. Lieutenant Malewski was fatally wounded at a later date during the Battle for Manila. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
