Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 277 (August 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Aloysius Machajewski (ASN: 36290946), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands during World War II. Private Machajewski, a wireman, volunteered to knock out a by-passed cave in Baguio on 25 April 1945, from which an enemy 37 millimeter gun was firing. He crawled forward under enemy rifle fire to the top of the cave. Reaching over he threw several grenades into the cave. Disregarding his own safety, he then jumped down to the entrance of the cave and fired a magazine of sub-machine gun ammunition into it, killing four enemy soldiers and removing a dangerous threat to our forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
