The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert W. MacBride (ASN: 20505375), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 21 April 1945, during the attack on Mount Pacawagan, Sergeant MacBride’s squad received intense enemy machine gun fire from well concealed hostile pillboxes. He skillfully reorganized his squad to place fire on the Japanese positions, and then left his covered position with a rocket launcher operator to search for a position from which rocket fire could be effectively placed on the enemy. As they moved forward, the operator was seriously wounded by hostile fire. Despite the constant enemy fire, Sergeant MacBride dashed across the open terrain and dragged the injured man to safety. His brave action was instrumental in saving the life of his comrade. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
