Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 112 (May 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant James L. Lyons (ASN: 38081381), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1945. When our forces made an assault river crossing to secure an important crossroads, the platoon in which Sergeant Lyons was an assistant squad leader was given the mission of locating and attacking the enemy flank. Upon approaching the river the platoon drew heavy enemy fire, and Sergeant Lyons was wounded in the stomach. Despite his injury, he refused to be evacuated, and rejoined his unit after receiving first aid. During the river crossing his squad leader was seriously wounded, and Sergeant Lyons immediately assumed command of the squad. He efficiently organized his men, strengthened the line, and, although wounded a second time, courageously continued to lead his men to the successful conclusion of the action. Sergeant Lyons was finally evacuated, and died the following day as a result of the wounds sustained in this engagement. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Lyons, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
