The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lewis Anderson (ASN: 33750088), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, during the period 20 February 1945 to 17 March 1945. On 20 February 1945, nearing the beach in a heavy turbulent sea and under heavy enemy fire Private First Class Anderson’s amphibian truck stalled, due to the propeller becoming surrounded with debris. While other craft took to sea under this heavy enemy mortar barrage, Private First Class Anderson with no though of his personal safety dove overboard and removed the debris thus enabling him to continue his mission of transporting a 105-mm howitzer to its initial firing position with utter disregard of the heavy enemy fire. His example of courage, determination, and devotion to duty were an inspiration to the men with whom he served.
