The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Raymond L. Laub (ASN: 35015591), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. When friendly tanks and tank destroyers failed to knock out an enemy dugout in a heavily wooded area near Bangag on 2 June 1945, Sergeant Laub, armed with grenades, crawled under enemy rifle fire to within ten yards of the emplacement, threw two grenades into the entrance and killed two Japanese. Then, under direct enemy fire, he rushed to the opening and threw two more grenades into the interior, killing the two remaining enemy. Sergeant Laub’s heroic action enabled his platoon to continue its advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
