Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 107 (May 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Herbert W. Langreder (ASN: 36331522), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 February 1945. Private Langreder was manning an assault boat during a river crossing when intense enemy fire struck the boat and the water on each side. All of his companions, except one, jumped overboard, but Private Langreder remained in the boat, towed his companions, who were in the water, to the safety of the far shore. Upon reaching his destination, he learned that five men had been wounded and needed medical treatment. He immediately volunteered to take the injured men back across the river, and placing them in the boat, he paddled them to safety, although once again his craft drew intense fire from hostile positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
