Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 120 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles E. Lally (ASN: 36728073), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February, 1945. After Private Lally’s platoon crossed a river, it was engaged in a heavy fire fight. When the need for additional ammunition became acute, Private Lally volunteered to re-cross the river in order to secure a new supply. The river crossing was made under most hazardous conditions, as the enemy covered the river with heavy frontal and flanking fire. However, he accomplished his mission, and returned to his unit with all the ammunition he could carry. As the fury of the battle mounted, additional support was needed and Private Lally again volunteered to cross the river to bear a message requesting mortar fire. As he reached the friendly side, the enemy fire trailing his movements overtook him and he fell dead. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
