Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 107 (May 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Michael A. Kurtiak (ASN: 35609256), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 22 February 1945. While Private Kurtiak was leading an attack against a heavily fortified room, the Browning Automatic Rifleman following him was seriously wounded. Private Kurtiak immediately picked up the automatic rifle and continued the attack, utilizing the great fire power of his wounded comrade’s weapon. Despite the fact that he was wounded by hostile hand grenades, he carried the attack forward in the face of heavy opposition, killing four of the enemy and driving the remainder from the room. After being treated for his wounds he returned to the scene of the action and remained with the attacking elements until the building was secured. The quick thinking and courageous action of Private Kurtiak, while attacking the heavily defended room, greatly aided in the accomplishment of his company’s mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
