The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private John Korba (ASN: 35027279), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 4 February 1945. Private Korba was first scout for an infantry platoon advancing down a road when he drew fire from an enemy machine gun. Having forced the Japanese to reveal their position, Private Korba had successfully completed his assignment. However, rather than withdraw, he continued to advance under hostile fire. He proceeded until he personally observed a hidden enemy antitank gun covering the road. He immediately opened fire, killing four Japanese in the vicinity of the gun, and preventing it from firing on our advance elements. Private Korba’s brave action enabled his platoon to advance rapidly and neutralize the hostile strong point with a minimum of casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
