The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred R. King (ASN: 37011426), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Engineer Combat Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. On 20 July 1945, Sergeant King was leading an engineer mine removal team up a trail in the vicinity of Singayen in the Cagayan Valley. As the group advanced through a bamboo grove an enemy machine gun suddenly opened fire, seriously wounding a member of the team. While everyone took cover, Sergeant King, courageously disregarding his personal safety, ran to the side of the injured man. Despite the continual fire of the Japanese machine gun, Sergeant King picked up the casualty, carried him bodily to the rear of a supporting tank, and lifted him into the escape hatch to safety. Sergeant King’s heroic action saved the wounded man’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
