Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 165 (June 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Bernard Kellman (ASN: 0-1313415), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February and 17 April 1945. When the advance of our troops was halted by an intense enemy barrage, Lieutenant Kellman, acting as observer for his mortar section, set up an observation post in a small shack which afforded excellent observation, but was fully exposed to the hostile fire. Despite his perilous position, Lieutenant Kellman calmly remained at his post under constant Japanese fire for one hour, directing effective mortar fire which silenced the enemy positions and paved the way for a successful attack. At a later date, when his company’ s command post was subjected to a heavy enemy artillery barrage, Lieutenant Kellman dashed into the impact area to aid the injured. When he was within ten yards of one casualty, he was struck in the face by a shell fragment and painfully wounded. However, he courageously helped carry the wounded soldier 300 yards to an aid station, and then returned to help evacuate other casualties. Lieutenant Kellman refused medical aid for his own wounds until he was certain that all the casualties had been cared for. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
