Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 68 (March 30, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Elbert P. Jones (ASN: 37068457), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February 1945. During the attack on the heavily fortified Paco Railroad Station, Private First Class Jones voluntarily crawled forward through intense enemy fire to within fifty yards of the building and shot twenty rounds of bazooka ammunition, destroying a portion of the Japanese defenders and their positions. Before he was mortally wounded by a machine gun burst, Private First Class Jones constantly exposed himself to the enemy in order to fire his weapon. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Jones, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
