The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert L. Johnson (ASN: 38564170), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. Private Johnson, an automatic rifleman defending a vital bridge near Pasola on 13 February 1945, exhibited outstanding courage and devotion to duty in repelling a Japanese dawn attack on his position. Against the first, savage onslaught he fired his weapon with telling effect, killing and wounding many enemy soldiers. As the fight developed he was shot and wounded in both legs, but he refused to be evacuated for medical aid. Preferring to remain at the bridge where he could give his utmost in fighting the enemy, he remained with his fellow soldiers through repeated attacks lasting five hours. Private Johnson would not leave his post, even though offered assistance, until the enemy were finally and completely crushed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
