The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Robert E. Jeans (ASN: 34185595), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 17 April 1945, a company of Infantrymen, advancing along a mountainous highway, met intense fire from enemy automatic weapons emplaced in nearby hills which inflicted heavy casualties on our forces. Sergeant jeans could see the wounded from his covered position. Immediately he dashed out onto the road in full view of the enemy, picked up one of the casualties, and carried him around a sharp bend to safety. Exposed to the intense fire from the Japanese weapons, he ran back around the curve, and carried another casualty to safety. Sergeant Jeans made four trips alone under heavy hostile fire to rescue the wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
