The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James K. Humphries (ASN: 34609432), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 1 March 1945. While his company was engaged in clearing the enemy from isolated positions, Private Humphries exposed himself to the enemy by crossing an open space to place fire on a building containing hostile soldiers. As he moved, the enemy placed intense rifle and machine gun fire upon him. However, he crawled forward to within 125 yards of the strongly fortified building, and opened fire through a window, killing two Japanese. His bold action momentarily disorganized the enemy, reduced the volume of their fire, and allowed his company to advance and secure the building. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
