Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 188 (July 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant [then Technician Fifth Grade] Robert A. Huls (ASN: 17049549), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. Seeing that a damaged and unmanned vehicle was obstructing traffic on a bridge swept by enemy fire in Manila on 9 February 1945, Corporal Huls, a mail orderly, voluntarily dashed forward and drove it off the structure. Then, when the intense hostile fire forced a quarter-ton ambulance driver to abandon his vehicle containing a wounded nan, Corporal Huls again courageously ran forward and drove the ambulance across the bridge to safety, preventing the casualty from being hit a second time. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
