Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 124 (May 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Lawrence H. Homan, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 17 February 1945. Captain Homan commanded an Infantry company which attacked the enemy-held Philippine General Hospital with the purpose of liberating 5,000 patients and trapped civilians. When an enemy machine gun threatened to disrupt the advance, Captain Homan quickly located the hostile gun and covered the position with 60 millimeter white phosphorus smoke shells. He then personally guided a rifle grenadier to a position from which the enemy gun was knocked out. After the evacuation of the internees was well under way, he again led a group of his men to systematically eliminate the remaining pockets of the enemy in the main hospital building. Captain Homan’s intrepid spirit, bold initiative and continued presence with the foremost elements of his unit at all times were an inspiration to those around him and accounted for the aggressive spirit of his unit throughout the operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
