The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lloyd W. Hoaglen (ASN: 39405731), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 21 April 1945. When a group of twelve enemy soldiers attacked a hill which had just been occupied by our forces, Private Hoaglen, on his own initiative, left his foxhole and made his way along the side of the hill until he was about 30 yards from the hostile forces left flank. Then he rose to his feet and, while fully exposed to fire from both the attacking force and a hostile machine gun, he began firing at the Japanese until they broke and ran. Private Hoaglen killed three of the enemy and played a major role in the dispersal of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
