Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 368 (November 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lee R. Hersha (ASN: 20502776), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 February 1945. When their company attacked the Perian Gate in the East Wall of Intramuros in Manila, Private First Class Lee R. Hersha and Private First Class Stanley Turek, automatic riflemen, assumed the lead in the assault on the enemy barricade. Their effective covering fire enabled other personnel of their unit to use rocket and rifle grenade fire which annihilated the enemy squad defending the position. Shortly afterward, Privates First Class Hersha and Turek courageously undertook the reduction of an enemy position in the thick wall of the meat market building located directly in front of the gate. As they entered a tunnel opening, firing almost continuously, thy were fatally wounded by an exploding mine. The combat efficiency, courage, and aggressiveness displayed by these two men contributed materially to the highly successful attack on this important objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Hersha, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
