The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert J. Harris (ASN: 33720808), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During the action at Dau on 29 January 1945, Sergeant Harris, an assistant squad leader, heroically moved forward under enemy machine gun fire to rescue a wounded man who lay beyond the front line in an open field completely exposed to hostile observation and fire. He grasped the casualty and carried him to safety by a series of short rushes across the open, fire-swept field. Sergeant Harris’ gallant achievement saved his comrade’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
