Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 139 (June 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold P. Hanson (ASN: 37260628), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 28 January 1945. Private Hanson, a quarter ton ambulance driver, served as a member of a litter squad during an attack against strong enemy positions, and repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile fire in order to evacuate wounded comrades. On one occasion he crawled to the side of a casualty, administered first aid, and then was forced by heavy machine gun fire to remain in the position for twenty minutes before he could move the injured man to safety. On another occasion he crossed fifty yards of exposed terrain under enemy fire to treat three seriously wounded men and help evacuate them. Private Hanson, by his personal valor, aggressive leadership and fearless devotion to duty, helped save the lives of many wounded men under the most hazardous conditions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
